How to Register for OHIP and Access Healthcare in Ontario
What is OHIP?
The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) is Ontario's publicly funded health insurance programme. It covers medically necessary services including doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency care, and diagnostic tests — all at no direct cost to the patient.
Am I Eligible?
You are eligible for OHIP if you are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or hold certain work or study permits, and you intend to make Ontario your primary place of residence.
The 3-Month Waiting Period
Most newcomers must wait three months before OHIP coverage begins. The waiting period begins from the date you establish residency in Ontario. During this time, it is strongly advised to purchase private health insurance to cover any medical costs that may arise.
How to Register
- Visit a ServiceOntario location in person (not available online)
- Bring proof of identity (passport or Canadian birth certificate)
- Bring proof of residency (Ontario driver's licence, utility bill, or bank statement with Ontario address)
- Bring proof of Canadian immigration status (PR card, work permit, etc.)
- Your green health card will be mailed to you within 2–4 weeks
Finding a Family Doctor
Ontario faces a significant shortage of family physicians, particularly in the GTA. Here are your best options:
- Health Care Connect — Ontario's official programme to match patients with family doctors. Register at ontario.ca/findadoctor
- Walk-in Clinics — available across the GTA for non-emergency care while you search for a family doctor
- Community Health Centres — offer primary care to those without a doctor, often with multilingual staff
- Tamil Canadians Directory — find Tamil-speaking family physicians in your area
